Ninjhax 2.0 released : 3DS homebrew, region-free and custom themes on latest 3DS firmware (9.9), by Smealum

Some people just seem to never be able to stop. Smealum just released Ninjhax 2.0: a hack that lets you run unsigned software (homebrew) on your 3DS, and it is compatible with the latest and greatest firmware, firmware 9.9.
Smealum released a video showcasing ninjhax 2.0 in action (see below).
Just like for the original Ninjhax hack, the game triggers an exploit in game Cubic Ninja. A legit cartridge of the game is required to run the exploit. Cubic Ninja is available on Amazon, alas not at reasonable prices (the same game cost about $5 last year. It’s a terrible game, in case you ask). As of now, it can be purchased for about $40 used, the question being how much you value homebrews, region free games, and, potentially, pirated games down the road.
On the video, smealum showcases a 3DS on the latest firmware, running a series of homebrews/emulators BlargNES, GameYob (a GBA emulator), the popular 3D Portal-like homebrew Game, and confirms that region-free loading works by loading a copy of Super smash Bros from a different Region.

To run Ninjhax 2.0, you will need the following:

  • A 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS console with a firmware version between 9.0.0-X and 9.9.0-X. X can be any digit.
  • An SD card compatible with your 3DS (the one it comes with will of course do).
  • A copy of the game CUBIC NINJA, either from retail or eShop.
(retail is available in US, EU and JPN; eshop was JPN-only, and is not available anymore)

ninjhax 2.0 Installation and how to:

Once you have your copy of Cubic Ninja, Head over to the official ninjhax 2.0 page to download the hack and read the instructions.

GBA rom injection is now possible for 3DS

Hacker Riku at GBATemp has managed to inject GBA roms to official GBA emulator on 3DS. This is the first time the official GBA emulator on 3DS can be used for something other than the 10 games Nintendo made available for Ambassador 3DS owners.
Nintendo offered Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program as a way of showing appreciation for the people who bought their 3DS before the price drop. The program includes 20 virtual console games in total, 10 NES and 10 GBA games. Even though Nintendo made NES games available for public later, GBA games were never made available thus making ambassador consoles precious.
Official GBA emulator on 3DS is very accurate. It uses the hardware emulation for accuracy. That makes in-game home menu, sleep function and savestates impossible but it is a price to pay i guess.

GBA rom injection is possible on all 3DS models. That means 3DS, 3DS XL/LL, 2DS, New 3DS and New 3DS XL/LL. You will need PBT CFW (for o3DS and 4.5 firmware only) or Pasta CFW (up to 9.2 both for o3DS and New 3DS). Gateway doesn’t support this yet, so i would advise using Pasta CFW instead. Also you can only use this on sysNAND, emuNAND doesn’t work for GBA titles.
The process involves installing stuff to sysNAND so i would advise to do a good reading before applying. Also having sysNAND backups can only help.

regionFOUR the Region Free Loader for 3DS updated

Remember smealum’s regionFOUR, successor of Regionthree? Now it is updated to support all New3DS/New3DSXL/3DS/3DSXL/2DS models with firmwares 9.0 through 9.7 (including 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5 and 9.6). Previous version only supported versions 9.2 and 9.7. Get your out of region cartridges ready.
regionFOUR lets you use your out of region cartridges on your 3DS and it bypasses any forced firmware updates on the cartridge if possible. The usage is similar to Ninjhax, you need to have a Cubic Ninja cartridge on the same region as your 3DS, you need to scan a QR code and have an internet connection ready. If you prefer to install the exploit to your cartridge, internet connection is a one-time-only requirement. After the exploit is triggered, you should eject the cubic ninja cartridge, plug your out of region game cartridge and press Start. That is all. Here is a video by smealum describing the process:
Let’s hope Nintendo understands region-locking is meaningless and makes Nintendo NX region free so we don’t have to jump through hoops.
